# Best Cashback Cards 2026
The best cash back card is the one that fits how you spend. There is no single winner, and the terms of individual cards change often, so this guide gives you a way to choose rather than a fixed ranking.
---
The Three Main Designs
- Flat-rate cards pay the same percentage on every purchase. They are simple and a good default.
- Tiered or category cards pay more in fixed categories such as dining, groceries or gas, and less elsewhere. They reward predictable spending.
- Rotating or choose-your-own category cards pay a high rate in categories that change or that you select, often with a cap. They reward people who track the details and activate categories.
---
Compare on Your Own Numbers
Add up a year of your spending by category, then multiply by each card's rate.
*Illustration:* $24,000 in yearly spending, split $6,000 groceries, $4,000 dining, $2,000 gas and $12,000 everything else.
- Flat 2% card: $24,000 x 2% = $480
- Category card paying 3% on groceries and dining, 2% on gas and 1% on the rest: $180 + $120 + $40 + $120 = $460
In this example the flat card wins slightly. Change the mix and the answer changes. (Rates are illustrative, not offers.)

What Else to Check
- [Annual fee](/glossary#annual-fee "Annual Fee - Glossary Definition"). A fee must be earned back by extra rewards.
- Caps. A high rate that ends after a quarterly or monthly cap earns less than it looks.
- Redemption. Cash back is the simplest. Some cards pay in points with different values.
- [Sign-up bonus](/glossary#sign-up-bonus "Sign-Up Bonus - Glossary Definition"). Worth having only if the spending requirement fits your normal spending.
- APR. If you ever carry a balance, interest will outweigh rewards. Pay in full.
- [Foreign transaction fee](/glossary#foreign-transaction-fee "Foreign Transaction Fee - Glossary Definition"), if you travel.

FAQ
Is a 2% flat card better than a category card? If your spending is scattered, usually yes. If you spend a lot in one or two categories, a category card can pay more.
Do cash back rewards count as income? Cash back earned from spending is generally treated as a rebate, not income. Tax rules vary; ask a tax professional if unsure.
