Frequently asked questions

How long will it take to pay off my credit card?

It depends on your balance, APR, and monthly payment. Enter them above to see the exact timeline. Paying only the minimum on a high-APR balance can take a decade or more; a fixed higher payment shortens it dramatically.

How much interest will I pay on my credit card?

Interest is charged monthly on your balance at your APR ÷ 12. The calculator sums it across every month until the balance hits zero, so you see the true total cost — often far more than the balance itself on high-APR cards.

Why does paying a little extra each month help so much?

Extra payments go straight to principal, which reduces the interest charged every future month — a compounding effect. Even $50–100 extra a month can cut months or years off the payoff and save hundreds in interest.

What if my payment is less than the interest?

If your monthly payment is smaller than the monthly interest charge, the balance grows instead of shrinking and never gets paid off. The calculator flags this and shows the minimum payment needed to make progress.

Should I consider a balance transfer?

If you have good credit, moving a high-APR balance to a 0% intro-APR balance-transfer card can pause interest entirely for 12–21 months, so more of each payment attacks the principal. Weigh the transfer fee (typically 3–5%) against the interest saved.
