Special Rules

Strengths

  • Industry-leading Ultimate Rewards transfer partners (Hyatt, United, Southwest, etc.)
  • Flexible points ecosystem across consumer and business cards
  • No foreign transaction fees on premium cards
  • Excellent travel protections and insurance benefits
  • Strong mobile app and customer service
  • Freedom cards offer excellent no-annual-fee earning potential

Weaknesses

  • Strict 5/24 application rule limits churning
  • One Sapphire rule prevents holding both premium cards
  • Freedom cards carry 3% foreign transaction fees
  • Limited footprint for in-branch banking outside major metros
  • Can be conservative with credit limits for new customers

Special Rules to Know

5/24 Rule: Chase will deny most card applications if you have opened 5 or more new credit card accounts (with any issuer) in the past 24 months.

One Sapphire Rule: You cannot hold both the Sapphire Preferred and Sapphire Reserve simultaneously. You must wait 48 months after receiving a Sapphire bonus to earn another.

Modified Double Dip no longer works for Sapphire cards as of 2024.

Business cards do not count toward your 5/24 count when issued by most other banks.

Chase prefers applicants who have an existing banking relationship (checking/savings account).
